Consequences of the Cold War The Cold War (1947-1991) was time of great tension for governments around the world. After America had developed nuclear weapons, the Soviets were quick to follow that path. As tensions between capitalist America and communist Russia elevated, each state began to change and adapt to their situation. The most visible of these adaptations was scientific advancement. Both Russia and the USA wanted to be the ones who had superior technology, and better weapons. Because of this, these two super powers entered in an arms race. Russia and America had both standardized automatic rifles, the Kalashnikov and M16 respectively. Both sides had also done testing for nuclear weapons such as Operation Crossroads, and Tsar Bomba. Not all scientific advancement was for the worst though. The cold war also saw huge advances in computer sciences, and medicine just name a few. These advancements brought up the quality of living for most of the world. On the other side of the coin, advancements in entertainment also allowed the government to get propaganda out easier, and didn't help with an atmosphere of fear. The cold war wasn't the happiest time to be around, with the constant fear of Nuclear annihilation, the mood was always too bright. The Western world had become obsessed with the idea that the Soviets were about to launch a preemptive strike, an attack with little to no warning. It's because of this that the CDS released videos like "Duck and Cover" or "Atomic Alert" which go into detail about how to survive a nuclear threat. These videos were shown in schools across the US, giving people a false sense of security, as though hiding under a desk, or covering up with a jacket could protect you from a nuke. This constant fear lead to movements like "Ban the Bomb" and other anti-weapons groups. Minorities and women also formed groups, to fight for equality, so that America could be a truly free nation. As people started getting together, a sense of patriotism was strengthened (the Hollywood propaganda also helped in that matter) and the ways of capitalist America were praised in the US, and the communist USSR were demonized. Meanwhile in Russia, the opposite was held true, they worshipped the supposed freedom of communism, and depicted Americans as being fat and greedy. This made both Nations economies very different. Americans were very much sold on the idea of buying consumer goods from a free market. It just made sense, increase one's standard of living, while simultaneously bettering the economy. This model made it easy for the US to increase military spending, without too much consequence, and the US still remains an economic super power. In contrast, the Soviet's ideology made it difficult to keep it's people happy, and keep up with American military spending. A common term used to describe this is "guns or butter". This refers to a government's choice to choose either to increase the size of their military, or keep their citizens happy and fed. The Soviets chose guns. They lost. Politics during the cold war was something similar to a person walking a tightrope, except the tightrope is on fire, the person has no limbs, and the minute they fall the world erupts in a fiery ball of nuclear death. Every single move the politicians made had the chance to end in disaster, luckily it never did, but it did come rather close during the Cuban missile crisis. In this event, the Soviets had given Cuba missiles "for defensive purposes" but that made America more than a little nervous. One thing leads to another, and you have the pentagon at defcon 2, and everyone freaking out that they're all going to die. All of a sudden the Russians back down, they remove their missiles from Cuba, and nobody gets nuked. While you can look for similar vowels in words, English is a strange language where pronunciation can vary wildly, even when spelling is almost identical. Take â€Å"laughter† and â€Å"slaughter,† for example. Add one letter...and the pronunciation becomes insanely different! By reading a poem out loud or listening to a recording of it, it becomes a lot easier to find the repetition of vowel sounds. Most of these people, such as, his senior strategist and counselor, national security advisor have all been accused of racially biased behavior. It was written by Quratul-Ain Manzoor for publication in Business Management and Strategy. The author’s purpose was to identify the factors that influence employee motivation. He asks if there is a relationship between organizational effectiveness and employee motivation. The model for his study is based on the vast literature on this subject over the last 30 – 40 years. The author was motivated to find any linking factors between employee motivation and organizational effectiveness. What the literature informs Mr. Manzoor is that empowerment and recognition have positive effects on employee motivation. So these two central factors form the basis of his research and findings. Realizing that these two terms (â€Å"motivation† and â€Å"organizational effectiveness†) are the central part of his study, the author spends two sections of his article in defining and explaining these terms. Specifically, he cites many previous books and articles and comes up with definitions as others have used these terms. He comes up with a consensus of what these factors mean. This is the focus of his literature review. The author adds to the discussion his own views about these topics. First, he says that money is the fundamental inducement, and that no other incentive comes even close. It alone can motivate individuals towards higher performance. But in order to get to its goals organizations need a few individuals to provide leadership. Leadership, he says, is about getting things done the right way, and to do that you need people to follow you. That’s based on trust he says. It is empowerment that provides organizational members with the sense of belonging and pride in the organization. It doesn’t matter how automated an organization is; high productivity depends on the level of motivation. And the primary factor in proper motivation is leadership. Mr. Manzoor wants to know if there is any causality between the individual motivation and organizational effectiveness. Using his extensive study of the literature on this subject, he sets forth three hypotheses. But before he states his hypotheses, he sets forth his objectives and conceptual framework. He is very clear about the main objectives of his study. He wants to analyze the impact of emloyees’ motivations on organizational effectiveness. The â€Å"sub-objectives† of his study are: (1) to determine the factors that increase employees motivation and (2) to examine the relationship between employees motivation and organizational effectiveness. His conceptual framework is brief, but is as follows: â€Å"Employee Motivation is the independent variable and will be examined through two of its factors, recognition and empowerment. The dependent variable is organizational effectiveness. He now sets forth three hypotheses. Hypothesis 1 is that â€Å"There is an effect of recognizing employees’ work on their motivation to work. † Hypothesis 2 is that â€Å"There is an effect of empowering employees in tasks on their motivation to work. Finally, Hypothesis 3 states: â€Å"There is a relationship between employees’ motivation and organizational effectiveness. † Concerning the first hypothesis, his analysis of several empirical studies fully supports his first hypothesis that recognizes the employees will increase their motivation to accomplish tasks and execute responsibllities in the organization. As for the second hypothesis, the author’s study of the literature fully supports the hypothesis that empowering employees increases their motivation towards work. Finally, the third hypothesis is confirmed from the literature consisting of multiple empirical studies; namely that there exists a positive relationship between employee motivation and organizational effectiveness. What this article offers is an excellent review of recent literature on the subject of motivation and organizational effectiveness. The literature is vast, but most of it indicates a correlation between motivation and organizational effectiveness, just as Mr. Manzoor shows. But what surprised me in reading this article was that I didn’t notice any detailed discussion of his methodology. There was no statistical analysis. There was no survey research. In fact, the author was relying on the methodology, statistical analysis and survey research of other researchers he studied. In my other course work I’ve had to review the literature of academic journals, and this one is different from those because these areas are missing. In fact, Mr. Manzoor’s article is closer to textbooks than to a professional peer reviewed journal article. In most textbooks I’ve seen, a subject area is written about, whether it is management, biology, or history, or some other academic field. The authors of textbooks then review the latest journal articles (as well as important books) and summarize the most important ones – especially the ones that others have cited most frequently. So, in a sense that is what Mr. Manzoor has done. Only his article appeared in an academic journal. Moreover, it was made to look like an original research article, because it had a literature review, discussion of its â€Å"model† and had hypotheses. But the article did not uncover any new data. Mr. Manzoor supported his hypothesis by relying on the data collected by others. My other major criticism of the article is that I think the author is over-simplifying such concepts of motivation and organizational effectiveness. What is needed is more careful measurement of these concepts, and fortunately many of the authors Mr. Manzoor references do that. But I think Mr. Manzoor takes a too simplified approach. For example, when he says that money is the primary motivator and nothing else comes close, I have to disagree with him. When somebody goes to work for a think tank, or a charity organization, or the U. S. State Department, or the Olympic team, one doesn’t do it primarily for the money. How do I know this? Because there is little financial reward, comparatively speaking, in the organizations I just cited. So why do individuals go to work for the United Way or compete in the high jump on the Olympic team. The answers vary: for recognition for achievement, or to do the right thing, to name a few. They don’t do it for the financial reward. But in the world of work and business enterprise, people do it for the money, and for the additional recognition that come from a higher paying position in the organization. The discussion of organizational effectiveness is also over simplified. What makes Apple a better company than Dell or Hewlett Packard? The short answer is motivation and leadership. But what is it about the motivation of Apple’s employees and Apple’s leadership that makes that company out-perform its competition? Are Apple’s employees any more highly motivated, dedicated or driven to achieve than those at competing companies? I think we have only just begun to understand motivation, leadership and organizational effectiveness, and that scholars in the management sciences are far from satisfied that they fully understand those concepts. But how is it actually contributed to acid rain and global warming? To answer this question, it would be important to understand the nature of acid rain and global warming. Acid rain is a form of pollution that can cause lots damages to the natural ecosystem, to man-made objects (e.g. buildings), as well as harm human health. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are the primary causes of acid rain. When combined with water vapor in the atmosphere, nitrogen dioxides and sulfur dioxide are converted to nitric acid and sulfur dioxide respectively (Audesirk, et al., 2005, p.853-54). Notable, life on Earth is dependent on carbon dioxide to regulate our planets temperature, yet too much of the CO2 can create a heat up over our atmosphere. For this reason, the unsustainable population growth and excessive consumption can rise up levels of carbon dioxide which result in the earths climate been altered in serious ways. How does the population growth contribute to acid rain and global warming? During ancient times, primitive people were sustained by dependent on the energy flowing from the sun. But as the population grew and technology increased, humans began to act more and more independently of these natural processes. For example, the Industrial Revolution began during mid-nineteenth century, resulted in a tremendous increase in our reliance on energy from fossil fuels (i.e. coal, petroleum and natural gas) for heat, light, transportation, and industry as well as agriculture sector. Today, we can see that many multinational corporations spend huge amount of money to make foreign direct investment (set up plant or factory) in emerging countries such as China and India to benefit from the cost advantage. This implies that more factories are set up abroad and the result is that more toxic gases being discharged to the atmosphere. Moreover, as more countries have industrialized, human industrial activities have discharged more nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. For example, United States discharge about 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere annually, two-third of it from power plants burning coal or oil (Audesirk et al., 2005, p.853-54). Consequently, the excess emission of these gases has contributed to acid rain. As mentioned earlier, human population growth is increasing in a rapid way annually. In other words, the demand for houses increases as well. In such circumstance, there are more and more trees being cutting down to supply more land for houses and thus deforestation happen in many places. Besides, the demand on raw materials for building houses would generate more chemicals and gases that pollute the environment. And, during the construction, the transportation such as trucks moving around would generate more carbon dioxide that further destroy the ozone layer and eventually result more acid rain. When we parked our car at the parking lot on a hot day, we can feel the hot when we get in to the car few hours later. A simple reason is that the heat and light from the sun get into the car, but it cant get back out. This is what the greenhouse effect does to our earth, thus result in a gradual increase in the earths temperature. We know that, people like to stay in the house to enjoying cool air-conditioner while watching TV, surfing web via computer, store favorite food in refrigerator and so on. However, they never realized that electricity cause pollution in many ways. When they do these things, they are causing more greenhouse gasses to be sent into the air. For this reason, in most cases, fossil fuels are burned to create electricity. Many pollutants are sent to the air when fossil fuels are burned. Imagine, large amount of households are using electricity every day, and the electric providers would need to burn many tons of fossil fuels to supply electric to the household, and their activities directly contribute to the global warming. A further contribution of population growth is through the vehicular pollution. As the population increases, the demand and usage of automobiles and other machines will increase as well. The activities of burning fossil fuels by a growing number of vehicles have amplified the natural greenhouse effect, producing global warming. According to Nationmaster (2005), countries like United States, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Australia and Malta have a large number on the possession of motor vehicles. Particularly in United States, the statistic shows that there are 765 vehicles per 100 people. Notable, the statistic had not included trucks and buses on the road. Therefore, vehicular pollution are considered largest source of air pollution which also the killer of our earth. So far, we have discussed the human population growth and their activities have contributed to these two environmental problem. What about animals? In fact, animal population growth also a threat to environment. According to a report by United Nation, livestock are one of the most significant contributors to todays most serious environmental problems. With increased population, people are consuming more meat products today. The global livestock sector is growing in a rapid way than other sectors. However, such rapid growth is not a good indication. Based on United Nations report, cattle produce more harmful greenhouse gases to atmosphere. Human activities in livestock sector accounts for 65% of nitrous oxide which can cause global warming; while livestock accounts for 37% of methane contribution and 64% of ammonia which is largely produced by the digest system of ruminants (i.e. cow and sheep) contributes significantly to acid rain. Throughout the above discussion, we can see that how population growth contributes to todays serious environmental problem. In fact, whatever we doing every day, we are actually contributed to these two environmental problems. When we discovered John’s body the following morning after he had left my house I couldn’t bring myself to believe that he had gotten lost in the blizzard. I know this blizzard was a bad one, we haven’t had one like that for quiet a while, but still John knows this land better than anyone. I really started to think that there was more to his death than a directional mishap. Just the location and direction his body was found in was enough alone to lead it to be suspicious. Well John was helping me with the chores he and I got to some talking. He couldn’t stop going on and on about you. He is so proud to be your husband. He loved being able to care for you. He cherished how he could earn everything for you with his own two hands. He told me how he would give you everything if he could, but he also told me that no matter what he did or how hard he tried it never seemed to satisfy you, as if you never appreciated what he did, he said that it seemed as if you wished you were somewhere else. I’ve seen it since the first day you two had gotten married. This was not the life you wanted, you were a city girl and always would be. You went along with it for as long as you could trying your best to accept it, until you just got fed up, stopped caring and stopped trying. You became bitter which just made John work harder he figured the more he could do for you the more he would please you. He wanted nothing more than to make you happy, yet every time he left you for the long works hours it just got you that much more angry, when all he was trying to do was make thing better for you. When you had married John you knew that you were becoming a farmer’s wife. Now I know this may be crossing some boundaries but it needs to be said.

Men and women from all around are having the â€Å"time of their life. † However, the lifestyle of the city, money, and connections don’t always create fulfilled, happy lives. For Daisy Buchanan, Nick Carraway, and Jay Gatsby, they are never alone but always isolated. Daisy Buchanan uses her need for attention and people to adore her most likely to cover up her fear of isolation. From the beginning Daisy has virtually been alone. Her husband Tom was not even there for the birth of their only daughter. Well, she was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where. I woke up out of the ether with an utterly abandoned feeling†¦ † (21). She was very isolated from Tom at that point of time in their marriage. This stems her fear of being alone leads to the suspicion of Tom and Myrtle’s affair. She doesn’t have the strength to step away from Tom’s money or her fear and confront him though. She uses attention to cope with his affair. For example, she kisses Gatsby in her own husband’s house. She needs to know that someone will give and receive her attention. She lets her fear of isolation run her life. Nick Carraway is the one of the most isolated characters in The Great Gatsby. He once said that, â€Å"At the enchanted metropolitan twilight I felt a haunting loneliness †¦ sometimes (61-62). † Through this quote Nick expresses his overwhelming loneliness of city life. He is originally from the Midwest and doesn’t know many people in West or East Egg. He feels alone in the â€Å"crowd† especially at Gatsby’s famous parties when â€Å"introductions (are) forgotten on the spot† (44) and enthusiastic meeting occur between people who don’t even know each other’s names. Nick also feels alone when he realizes he had turned thirty already. He fears growing old because he sees isolation within old age. He sees the people around him and notices that no one is truly happy and as they age life doesn’t get any better. Jay Gatsby’s death confirmed his fears of isolation. Gatsby was the most well known man in West Egg and hundreds of well known, famous people showed up at his parties every night, yet â€Å"Nobody came† (143) to his funeral. Nick was just an average person just trying to work his way up to the American dream. If no one came to say goodbye to Jay Gatsby after his death, what was in store for him when he died. This mphasized his fear of growing older and being isolated. Jay Gatsby seemed like he was on top of the world from the outside looking in. He was extremely wealthy and had hundreds of people at his house at all times; however, on the inside he was just like everyone else, lonely. The love of his life married a different man when he went off to war. He had never gotten over her and always longed for her to come back to him.
